What you Need to Know Before Renting an Apartment
So… You’re looking for an apartment. Before you rush out and fall in love with the first place you see, it’s important to educate yourself about each apartment community you are considering to make sure that you’re happy with your choice down the road. After all, you’ll be living there for at least a month and you don’t want any surprises! Before signing the lease, here are 10 questions you must ask before moving into an apartment.
- Is the apartment in a good location?
Obviously, you will want to choose an apartment in an ideal location. Ask yourself if the apartment you are considering is close to your job, school, church, etc. Are there shopping, dining, and entertainment options nearby? Map out each location and find out which area will be best for you.
- What kind of amenities do they offer?
Not only are you searching for a place to live, but you should also be considering what amenities are available at each apartment community.
- What type of floor plan should I be looking for?
Are you going to be moving in with a roommate? Do you need one or two bedrooms? Two bathrooms? Does the new apartment have enough room for all of your stuff? If not, you might have to rent a storage unit or get rid of some things that you don’t use anymore.
- What are the leasing terms?
How many months are you signing a lease for? Keep in mind that breaking a lease can reflect poorly on you, not to mention the fees associated with breaking a lease. Along with leasing terms, make sure you know the apartment’s policy on other fees such as moving in/out, security deposits, parking passes, pet fees, etc.
- Is the apartment pet-friendly?
While some apartments allow pets, others may only allow small pets, or no pets at all. If this is going to be a deal breaker, you need to find out their pet policy right away as well as any fees involved such as a pet deposit.
- Do I need renter’s insurance?
Even if renter’s insurance isn’t required by the apartment community, it’s always a great idea to invest in it. If you already have car or life insurance, talk to your insurance agency about bundling renter’s insurance in your policy. Renter’s insurance is a surprisingly affordable way to make sure that all of your possessions are covered in the event of a fire, flood or even a break-in.
- What’s the policy on basic repairs?
Murphy’s law states that anything can go wrong, probably will. Even the best apartment will require a little maintenance at some point. Before you move in, make sure that the apartment community offers basic maintenance and repairs. Ask them how quickly maintenance requests will be answered. The last thing you want to do is get stuck with a broken air conditioner in the middle of July.
- Are utilities included in the rent?
Some apartment communities will include basic fees such as gas, electric, water, trash removal or Wi-Fi. Be sure to ask if any of these are included in your rent. If not, find out if these basic utilities will fit in your budget.
- Am I allowed to decorate?
Some apartments forbid certain decorating such as painting walls, putting up wallpaper, nailing holes in walls, etc. Breaking any of these rules can result in you losing your security deposit. Be sure you know the apartments policies on decorating before you move in.
- What happens if I break the lease?
We all know that life can be unpredictable sometimes. Certain things happen that nobody could have foreseen. That’s why it’s important you know your apartment’s policy on breaking your lease. If, for some reason, you need to move out before your lease is up, what are the consequences? You will probably risk getting your deposit back or you or a cosigner might even be responsible for covering the rent up until the lease date.
